Week of Sept. 25

Monday, September 25th, 2006

HOMEWORK:

  1. Lit. LOGS due Friday.
  2. Oral Presentations will begin on October 13.  More info about these presentations will be handed out in class this week.
  3. Midterms go home tomorrow and are due on Friday.

Wednesday:  I loved going outside and listening to your writer’s notebook entries.  They were all so different, but had some common themes poking through.  I hope I don’t have to CAJOLE you to work on your literature assignments this week!

Monday:  We are getting all our drafts in this week and will start new writing projects tomorrow or Wednesday.  This is Banned Books Week.  Have you ever read a banned book?

Testing, 1..2…3…

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Thursday Update:  We had some time to talk about books today and to work on our literature logs.  It’s nice to get back into our routines.  (For me it is, anyway!)  REMEMBER TO FINISH YOUR LIT. Logs tonight!

How’d your testing go today?  I wish there weren’t two writing tests in the same session.  That was tough!  Remember to relax and massage those hands tonight.

ALSO…Remember LITERATURE LOGS ARE DUE ON FRIDAY!

Homework:  Writer’s Notebook 2-Pager due Friday…(We will work on these in class on Thursday! )

Thursday: Another great day in 401.  I loved wearing the tape in honor of Owen in Becoming Naomi LeonOliver’s Game is a terrific candidate for the YHBA.  And it looks like Ezra’s going to live in Phoenix Rising.  Can’t wait to hear some of your notebook entries tomorrow!

Wednesday:  We had our first literature circles today and I thought they went swimmingly.  We have a writer’s notebook assignment due Friday, but we will have time to work on that in class tomorrow.  Happy Pinnacle Day, all!

Tuesday:  It was good to be back in school today.  I missed all of you yesterday.  Today we made good headway on our lit. logs and those are due tomorrow.  First period, what do you think of the Louis Pasteur book or the Caldecott winner?  Second period, what did you think of Voices In the Park?  Third period, what did you think of my disaster with the VCR??? I’m still not over that!  See you all tomorrow, on Pinnacle Day!  We read this in 1st period.

I’m especially curious about the inferences you all made about the teacher who had the international flags in his classroom.  What was your opinion of that article?

News and Notes for the Week of Sept. 5

Friday:  We were in the computer lab today.  Almost all the animal essays are turned in.  And many of you made good headway on your writer’s portraits.  We had a few foul ups with printers and folders, but for the most part, I thought we made good progress.  I’m going to enjoy the weather this weekend.  Perhaps it will be benign??? Any awesome plans?

Thursday:  Thank you to the brave souls who shared their writer’s notebook entries.  I was very impressed.  Remember to keep working on your literature log every day.  Very important!  How do you like the book you chose?

Three texts were shared in the different classes today. The Hello Goodbye Window, Voices In the Park, and Jane Hammel’s Critical Literacy Journey article.  Any reactions to these texts?  We’ll be talking about them more in the next few days.  See you at Open House??!

Writer’s Wednesday:  Today we learned all about the word BENIGN.  Can you use it in a sentence?  We also worked on our literature logs.

Tuesday:  Today we almost got into our literature books, but not quite. I’ll go over all the directions for the lit. logs tomorrow.  What do you think of our read aloud books?  Can you offer any reactions for Germ Hunter, or Phoenix Rising, or Becoming Naomi Leon ???  I’m enjoying all  three.
