March Comes in Like a Lion…
Written on March 2, 2007 – 8:07 pm | by heffernan
Have you heard this expression?
Today we started class with a read aloud. Then we talked about using commas to set off interrupters. Can you remember any interrupters? We had great chats about the texts we’ve been reading this week. Then we moved over to the computer lab. We got a lot done this week. I hope you all have some fun and sun this weekend. How are the book brochures coming along???

Hey-Oh! What are you guys reading right now?
Ms H-
i think you’ll be pleasently surprised that i know every single word to the poem “sick”
i remember reading it in 3rd grade
i still have that folder too-i found it today while i cleaned my stuff to move.
:mrgreen”
Right now I’m reading The Keeper which is about a junoir high school student who must face the fact that his father is plunging fast into a serious mental illness.
It is very sad! BUT GOOD!!!!
Ms. H – I think it means if you get bad weather at the beggining of March (or was it Spring?) then there will be nice weather at the end of March. (Or was it Spring?) I know this because my mom said that yesterday or the day before and told me what it meant.
Oh, and did you hear about those 15 torndadoes yesterday? In all I think 24 people died!!!!!
OH YEAH, and I’m almost done with my brochure.
All I need to do is write down some discussion questions, find the themes and messages and then explain why the book is important!
Hi Mel and Haley, Love to see you little sevvies here. I can’t believe you still have the poem folder Haley. I need to do more poetry reading with the sixers. I’m going to work on that! Our read alouds in the three l.a. periods are: Milkweed, Al Capone Does My Shirts, and Silent to the Bone. All very good.
Leyla, that book sounds great. Where’d you find it??? I just went on a long walk. Cold but pleasant. The quilt show at the Convention Center is terrific. If you’re downtown, you might want to check it out.
I went to the Monroe County Public Library, but let me warn you, I got the last copy.
But I’ll probably be done with it by Tuesday, so you could go get it.
It’s by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and I asked her where she got the idea and inspiration to write the book. (I know, REALLY!) And she said that, “I wrote it because my first husband became mentally ill five years after we married, and after three years of unsuccessful treatment, he was placed in an institution and we later divorced. It was so traumatic for me, a young wife, that I wondered how a young teenager would handle a similar situation in which it was his father who was mentally ill. So I wrote The Keeper because I had to know.” (That’s exactly what she said in a reply to my email) It’s a great book, and I think a lot of people should read it.
But not people who don’t like sad books!
Haley- Where are you moving again?
Leyla- Sounds interesting (the book).. and, about the tornadoes: I know! I was watching the news about it.. it was tragic.
Ms. H- In blue block at JCMS we are studying poetry… We are going to read “Much Ado About Nothing” (which I’ve read). We are also making these poetry portfolios and we have to recite a published poem in class and right a paper analysizing (sp?) it. Most people aren’t excited about it, but I like it….
Melanie
haha I didn’t even start my brochure yet…………I’m one of those ‘leave it till l8r’ ppl…
Yeah we’re gettin lots of sun this weekend Ms. Heff (its sarcasm if u havent noticed)
AK! I hope you can get it done! We teacher types tend to worry about these things you know. What book are you writing about again? This snow has been funny, just lightly drifting down all day.
Haley’s moving???? WHAT???
Mel, what poem will you memorize? I like the sound of that assignment. May have to steal that one!
L, you emailed PRN and she emailed you back??? When did this happen??? That is very terrific!
Yeah-my mom is moving from Bedford back down here.
this way i’ll be able to go to more school stuff.
can u believe spring break is this early?!
i would rather wait a couple weeks when it’s actually spring!
i came by school about a month ago but the only teachers i saw were Ms. Robb and Mrs. Gromer. i was hoping to see all of my older teachers like Mrs. Watkins and Mrs. Procter-but they had already left.
anyway-enjoy spring break!
I memorized “The Cat and the Moon” by Yeats… Hehe!
Ms. H – I really DID email Phyllis Reynolds Naylor!
In fact, you can email her at FriendsofAlice@aol.com , and she can give you advice, she answers questions and sometimes she even posts your emails on her website!
I email her all the time!
But I emailed her and asked about that book a few days ago. And if the rest of you guys don’t know who she is, she’s written:
the Shiloh books, (I know where she got the idea to write that), the Alice books, (LOVE THEM!), Boys vs girls books, Jade green: a ghost story, the York trilogy books, Bernie Magruder books, and a bunch of other books.
She’s an awesome writer!!!
P.S. Did anyone see the lunar eclipse?
OMG! I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THE LUNAR ECLIPSE!!!!!

I wanted to get a picture and look at it through binoculars!
Was it cool:?:
It was too cloudy to see the lunar eclipse!
It wasn’t fair. It seems like less people are getting on the blog. Or mabye your putting too many different catergories Mrs. Jeffe. Ive gotta do my brochure now! bye.
When I left for my babysitting job at 6:00 on Saturday, it was snowing and I didn’t think I would be able to see it.
So I don’t know what it looked like, but I know what it would have looked like. When I came back at 10:30 (I know, it was a LONG job!) I could see the moon, but it didn’t look very different.
Hey Enrique, what book are you doing for your brochure?
Ok, Im reading this really really awesome book. It’s so awesome youll think it’s not awesome. Ok here it goes *Clears Throat* Cat in the Hat(And its parody fox in the box, not socks)
Did I mention my brochures done? m mom didnt like it so i “FIXED” it
test
Leyla – I’ve read “Jade Green…” That was a creepy book…
Yeah, it was too cloudy out. For the lunar eclipse, I mean.
Leyla- I read the Shiloh series. She is a great author.
I didn’t see the lunar eclipse because I don’t think it was possible from here. I went to Queenstown last weekend. Yesterday, we saw people bungee jumping off a bridge. Some people dove off backwards.
I think that Queenstown is where bungee jumping started.
YIKES!
That bungee jumping sounds scary!
I haven’t read the Shiloh series yet. I know it’s pretty good, but I haven’t read them. Is Jade Green REALLY scary?
Melanie and Mary Anne, what are your favorite genre of book?
P.S. Mary Anne, I’m gonna go on your blog in a sec!
Leyla – I mean, Jade Green definately wasn’t really scary, just kind of wierd. You can get much scarier than that, believe me. Hm… I like action/adventure books ususally. Some mystery, a tad of fantasy, but only like Harry Potter and stuff like that. You?
Melanie – If Jade Green is weird, then I don’t think I want to read it. My favorite kinds of books are books about abductions and groups of friends. My favorite genre: realistic fiction and I also like really serious books like Monster by Walter Dean Myers. Just Google that and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
Leyla- I don’t really know what my favorite genre is. I like mysteries. I agree that the bungee jumping was a bit freaky, so I just jumped on a bungee trampoline instead.
Hello, dudes. Yo, boys and girls. Today is opposite day!! (More like every day) So when we’re loud in front of you, Ms.H, we’re actually being goody good shoes nice kids, eh? Yeah?
Wow. Opposite Day sounds so fun. Can’t wait!
Thanks for letting me know, Chung!
Chung-I wish you told me that earlier
lol
Leyla – That book sounds good (Monster), I like books like that too.
Melanie
Yeah, Monster is an awesome book!
When I first got it, I read it for about an hour and got half way through the book!
And now I’m almost done!
Have you read Monster? Do you know what it’s about?
Mary Anne – That trampoline sounds really cool! How high did you go
P.S. Man, I have almost NO homework tonight!!!!! YAY!!!!
Anybody else have homework?
What’s an interrupter?
Dunedin is a really Scottish town in NZ. I can hear people playing bagpipes outside right now.
Leyla – I’ve read part of it on Google, but that was it.
Mary Anne- a interrupter is like…
EX. A person is talking in Spanish to a person that only knows English. There is usually a person next to the person talking in Spanish and translating what they are saying to the person that knows English
Mary Ane – an interrupter is like something you say to seperate a sentence? I don’t know for sure but here’s what it’s like:
I finished my brochure, however, my extra credit homework isn’t done. (That’s not true though, I’m not doing the extra credit) So do you know what I’m saying?
Madsion – Are you talking about an interpreter?
hey happy st.patricks day! :mr.green: i think i’m getting sick
see ya’ll on monday-if i’m not sick!
