Week of Feb. 25

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Monday Notes:  After gym, Ms. Albright read Splish Splash to us.  It’s by April Sayre, the author who will visit our school in March.  This is a picture of Ms. Sayre.  We had a great science lesson about muscles in the afternoon.  We made muscles with rods and rubberbands and paper clips.  We also read a book about Ruby Bridges and wrote letters to Ms. Bridges about how her book has inspired us.  We ended the day by reading books to our 1st grade book buddies.   We’re excited about our field trip to Wonderlab on Wednesday!

Wednesday Notes:  After lunch we had a great trip to Wonderlab.  We watched a demonstration about chemicals and combustion.  We even saw a fire tornado.  There were so many things to do in Wonderlab, our 2 hours flew by.  Did you have a favorite exhibit?  I think I liked the bee hive.

This is April Sayre!

Week of February 18

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Monday Notes:  We worked hard today, even though the beautiful snow was a little bit distracting every once in awhile!    We compared singular and plural nouns for our spelling work.  4th graders took a math test.  3rd graders studied prisms and pyramids.  We learned about writing dialogue and worked on our political cartoon museum.  Island of the Blue Dolphins group had a great discussion at literature circle time.  We worked more on our “Ticket To Freedom” stories for Wildcat Tales.  At the end of the day we met with our first grade book buddies and helped them with their healthy heart pictures.  A great start to the week!

Tuesday Notes:  Today we worked hard on our science test in the afternoon.  We learned about BIOMES and we worked on researching information about different BIOMES from books written by April Sayre, the author who will visit us next month.  We ended the day by reading Remember by Toni Morrison.

Wednesday Notes:  Well, our 2 hour delay allowed us all some extra sleep, but we missed our field trip to the opera at IU.  That trip will probably be rescheduled.  Today we had an awesome reading workshop.  The Eagle Song group talked about the book for a LONG time!  Great job, readers!  We talked about the first settlers to Bloomington around 1812.  We also took a wonderful walk with our YMCA teacher.  We ended the day with our reflection journals.  Tomorrow, we’ve earned an extra recess!

Week of Valentine’s Day!

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Tuesday Notes:  Today we learned more about joints:  pivot joints, gliding joints, ball and socket joints, and hinge joints.  Mrs. Albright read a book to us by April Sayre, the author who will be visiting our school next month.  Yesterday we read Granddaddy’s Gift and talked about the right to vote.  The YMCA came today and we used stethoscopes to listen to our heartbeats.  We also learned about how to write editorials.  We are looking forward to our Valentine’s Day party!

February 7

We had a great week.  Mrs. Albright, our student teacher, taught a fun lesson about “joints.” We taped sticks to our hands and tried to write and draw without using our finger joints.  It was tricky.  We read Henry’s Freedom Box and we are almost done with Gossamer. To kick off African American history month, we had an African American Read In, where we read books by African American authors and illustrators.  We’ll keep reading these books next week.  We compared different purposes authors have for writing books. We have started our new literature books and we are having great discussions.  We read about child workers in India with our Time For Kids magazine.  Mrs. Cantrell came in on Friday and worked with our knitting circle on Friday afternoon.  We got a lot done!
