Week of November 2

Wednesday, November 4:  It was great to be back together today.  We practiced a brief Veteran’s Day presentation for Ms. Bales-Hall in the morning.  Then we went outside and had literature circle discussions about Sarah, Plain and Tall. When we came back to the room, we wrote paragraphs about an important idea from the chapters.  We also guessed the meaning of a word from the book, windbreak, and used our dictionary app to find the definition.  In the afternoon, we took our writer’s notebooks out for a field trip.  We wrote outside on this beautiful sunny afternoon.

Thursday, November 5. We learned about similes and metaphors today.  Similes and metaphors add spark to our writing. A simile contains the word LIKE or AS.  School is like a paradise!  A metaphor is a direct comparison.  School IS a paradise!      In Math class, we learned about line plots and worked on some word problems.  We finished up our day with quiet reading.

Friday, November 6.  We worked to put together our portfolios in the morning. Then we worked on our Shape Shifter unit.  We learned more about Native Americans in Indiana and how the 10 o’Clock Line treaty involved the Native Americans moving to the northern part of Indiana.  We worked with play dough to create memorial statues to honor the Indigenous People who lived here before us.  Then we wrote letters to Mr. Finley to share ideas about Land Acknowledgement statements.  A great day of reading, writing and learning!
